I don’t know what it is about ten-game slates, but outside of a week one triumph, the two ten-game slates I’ve put myself up against have led to a cumulative 6-14 record. So I’m going back to a five-game schedule, if only for my own sanity. This week gives us a trio of SEC conference games, an ACC match-up in Atlanta, and a Big Ten game in Wisconsin.

By the way, do you want to know how important the selection committee believe strength of schedule to be? Ask Marshall. The Thundering Herd is undefeated, the only non-Power Five conference team to remain undefeated. So where are they ranked in the College Football Playoff Selection Committee's Top 25? Somewhere below 26th. They're not even in the poll. Ranked ahead of them by the committee are LSU (7-3), Texas A&M (7-3), and Utah (6-3).

The Herd is averaging nearly 48 points a game, giving up less than 17 per game, and is 9-0. The only problem is their best victory is either Middle Tennessee or Akron. The Herd will probably reach one of the top six bowls, seeing how East Carolina is somewhat imploding and the rules state that a non-Power Five team must get in. But Marshall is proving that strength of schedule is really important.

The Games:

19 Clemson at 22 Georgia Tech (Saturday, Noon, ESPN)
Georgia Tech is playing at a far better clip than anyone, myself included, was expecting of them this season. At the start of the season I predicted Tech to lose to Virginia Tech (won 27-24), Miami (won 28-17), North Carolina (lost 48-43), Pittsburgh (won 56-28), Clemson (yet to play), and Georgia (yet to play). The Jackets are averaging just under 39 points per game while giving up just under 26 per game. Clemson rolls into Atlanta this week with one fewer win that Tech, but a better conference mark. The Tigers are averaging 32.4 points per game and giving up only 18.4 points per game. They took the defending champion FSU Seminoles to overtime and they beat North Carolina 50-35. What does that mean? Who knows? These teams can surprise you on any given Saturday. Right now, I’m taking Clemson to win a very close game, perhaps even requiring overtime again. Tigers win.
Final Score: Clemson 27, Georgia Tech 24
INCORRECT: Georgia Tech won 28-6

16 Nebraska at 20 Wisconsin (Saturday, 3:30pm, ABC)
Nebraska runs the ball for nearly 281 yards every time they take the field, leading to them controlling the clock. Wisconsin, meanwhile, averages almost 50 more yards per game rushing, though the Huskers are outscoring them 40.4 to 36.8. The Badgers, though, have the third best scoring defense in the nation, allowing only 14.3 points per game. In fact, in their last three conference games, the Badgers have cumulatively outscored Maryland/Rutgers/Purdue 123-23. This game will go a long way in determining who faces Ohio State for the Big Ten championship. If both teams manage to get their running games going, it could be low scoring, as they eat up the clock. The last time they played each other, Wisconsin ran away with the game, winning 70-31. I think Nebraska will have studied that number long and hard this week, and will come out fired up. Huskers win.
Final Score: Nebraska 35, Wisconsin 24
INCORRECT: Wisconsin won 59-24

1 Mississippi State at 5 Alabama (Saturday, 3:30pm, CBS)
Somebody has to claw their way out of the unholy scrum that is the SEC West and claim a December 6 date in Atlanta in the SEC Championship Game. I think this game will go a long way toward determining that team. Alabama is playing some great football at just the right time. They recently shut out the Aggies of TAMU 59-0 and they just escaped Death Valley (Louisiana) with a hard-fought overtime win over LSU. Mississippi State, meanwhile, just dominated UT-Martin, and before that barely got by conference-winless Arkansas. This is still the same Mississippi State team that gave up 34 points to UAB. The Crimson Tide is giving up just over 10 points per game since their loss to Ole Miss. Over the same stretch, they’re averaging nearly 32 points per game. I think this will be a close game, with neither team able to establish dominance until the clock hits 00:00. By that time, though, I expect the Tide to have done just a little more than Mississippi State. Bama wins.
Final Score: Alabama 27, Mississippi State 21
CORRECT: Alabama won 25-10

9 Auburn at 15 Georgia (Saturday, 7:15pm, ESPN)
Georgia went to Kentucky in a foul mode and the Wildcats paid a hefty price, falling 63-31. With less than two minutes to go, Georgia was still passing and running. I wondered if Georgia was going for 70 points, a feat they’ve not attained since September 17, 1994 against Northeast Louisiana. But, we are talking about Mark Richt…and I’m actually surprised he let his team score over 60. Auburn, meanwhile, is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Aggies. Trust me, no one in Athens has forgotten the miracle that took place in Jordan-Hare last year that began Auburn’s magical run to the SEC championship. This isn’t just a rivalry, this is the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. This is the rivalry that has been played for over 110 years and the teams are separated by only 100 points or so. The road team tends to play well. Rankings mean nothing. UGA fans have started calling for a blackout, but Mark Richt has downplayed the rumors. It’s possible, but don’t hold your breath. That said, I’m looking for a close, hard-fought game, with Georgia winning late.
Final Score: Georgia 31, Auburn 26
CORRECT: Georgia won 34-7

17 LSU at Arkansas (Saturday, 8:00pm, ESPN2)
Arkansas will eventually knock off an SEC opponent. It is going to happen. They took the Aggies to overtime before falling 35-28. Alabama beat the Hogs 14-13 in regulation in a game in which Arkansas missed an extra point. Georgia, unfortunately for Arkansas, broke the trend and laid 38 on the Hogs before halftime en route to a 45-32 victory. Mississippi State, the #1 team in the nation, defeated Arkansas 17-10 in Starkville. The win is coming for Arkansas. Eventually someone is going to trip up. And I think that happens this week. LSU rolls into northwest Arkansas after a deflating overtime loss to Alabama. The Tigers are downtrodden and the Hogs have to be happy about how well they’ve played lately. It’s the perfect storm for the Razorbacks. QB Brandon Allen makes enough plays and the bruising running game of Arkansas carries the Hogs to a tight win over divisional foe LSU. Woo Pig Sooie (whatever that means).
Final Score: Arkansas 27, LSU 24
CORRECT: Arkansas won 17-0

The Right Wing Top Ten
The Associated Press Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll both feature a Preseason version. I even posted a “Preseason Top Ten,” or something to that effect, a while back. I never intended to use that poll as a basis for the Right Wing Top Ten, though.

15. Marshall Thundering Herd (last week: NR)
14. UCLA Bruins (last week: NR)
13. Kansas State (last week: 8)
12. Georgia Bulldogs (last week: NR)
11. Ole Miss Rebels (last week: NR)

10. Nebraska Cornhuskers (last week: 13)
Why: Nebraska’s running backs are great, and that running game is paying big dividends.

9. Auburn Tigers (last week: 6)
Why: A tight loss to the Aggies sent Auburn into a tailspin, which pretty much blew up the SEC West.

8. Ohio State Buckeyes (last week: 12)
Why: No one thought Ohio State would beat Sparty the way they did, but they claimed control of the Big Ten race.

7. Arizona State Sun Devils (last week: 11)
Why: Arizona State demolished the once mighty Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

6. Baylor Bears (last week: 10)
Why: Baylor went to Norman and stomped Oklahoma.

5. TCU Horned Frogs (last week: 7)
Why: TCU overcame Kansas State and looks like the front-runner for the Big XII.

4. Oregon Ducks (last week: 4)
Why: Oregon went to Utah and beat down the Utes to claim the PAC-12 North.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (last week: 3)
Why: Alabama was tested by LSU, but I think they’ve come out stronger on the other side. I actually think this is one of the most dangerous teams in the nation.

2. Florida State Seminoles (last week: 2)
Why: The Noles got by the last real threat they’ll face before the playoff.

1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (last week: 1)
Why: Mississippi State olds the top spot, even though an Arkansas team on the rise took them to the brink.

Bowl Projections
It’s the time of year again. Time to unveil some bowl projections. Don’t worry, these are sure to be wrong.
Sugar Bowl (playoff semifinal): Florida State vs Oregon
Rose Bowl (playoff semifinal): Alabama vs TCU
I’ve changed up the order for the playoff, because I actually think the committee will avoid putting in two teams from one conference.
Cotton Bowl (group of five): Mississippi State vs Baylor
Orange Bowl (group of five): Clemson vs Notre Dame
Peach Bowl (group of five): Duke vs Marshall
Fiesta Bowl (group of five): Michigan State vs Arizona State
Citrus Bowl (ACC/B1G vs SEC): Nebraska vs Ole Miss
Outback Bowl (B1G vs SEC): Ohio State vs Georgia

I’m not going to lie...this has been a rough year for the predictions. I’m averaging 2.83 correct picks and 2.17 incorrect picks per week (counting weeks one and six as two-weeks each). If I were playing baseball, that would be pretty good. A .567 winning percentage would’ve been a surefire playoff team in both leagues. But in college football, where every game is a playoff…not so much. Last week Georgia crashed and burned in spectacular fashion against hated rival Florida. Louisville failed to upset FSU after a big first half lead and Ole Miss let one slip away in the Grove.

What lies in store this week? Well, it’s another ten-game slate.  In the SEC, Georgia travels to Kentucky and the Aggies head to Auburn, while Alabama hits the road for the big game with LSU. The team loosely associated with the ACC, Notre Dame, travels to the desert, to face the Sun Devils. In the ACC, newly-ranked Georgia Tech takes on NC State. The PAC-12 gives us Utah playing host to current playoff contender Oregon. Three huge games, Baylor at Oklahoma, West Virginia at Texas, and Kansas State at TCU, will focus much attention on the Big XII. And the biggest Big Ten match-up of the season takes place as Ohio State visits Michigan State.

The Games:

20 Georgia at Kentucky (Saturday, Noon, ESPN)
Georgia was upset (athletically) last week. Georgia remains upset (emotionally) this week, as they travel to the Bluegrass State. The Dawgs have only one more game to go without RB Todd Gurley, so the Wildcats don’t have to game plan for that. I have to imagine Georgia comes out hot in this game, looking to smack the Wildcats down before they get any momentum. Georgia QB Hutson Mason has taken some flak this year, and while he’s not putting up the gaudy yardage numbers of Aaron Murray, he’s the most accurate passer in the SEC (in terms of completion percentage, Mason [67.9% complete] is the seventh most accurate QB in the nation). Kentucky is a tricky team that is better than people think. They took Florida to triple overtime and actually beat South Carolina, but they’ve lost three straight coming into this game. Georgia might be looking ahead to next week’s big showdown with Auburn, but if the Dawgs come out angry it won’t be a bad thing…an angry Georgia can be a devastating Georgia. Dawgs win.
Final Score: Georgia 42, Kentucky 20
CORRECT: Georgia won 63-31

12 Baylor at 15 Oklahoma (Saturday, Noon, Fox Sports 1)
Baylor averages 50 points per game. Oklahoma averages 41.5 points per game. Oklahoma gives up 21.8 per game. Baylor gives up 21.9. Baylor needs the win to stay in the thick of the Big XII title race, should K-State or TCU, or both, falter down the stretch. But Oklahoma will not make that easy for them. The Sooners still have a lot to play for. It won’t be enough to knock off Baylor, but a good showing by the Sooners will certainly help their bowl game prospects. Bears win.
Final Score: Baylor 38, Oklahoma 33
CORRECT: Baylor won 48-14

24 Georgia Tech at NC State (Saturday, 12:30pm, ESPN3)
For the first time in 2014, Georgia Tech appears in the predictions. They are ranked, but who knows how long that will last… NC State took Florida State to the edge, forcing the Seminoles to snap out of their sleep walk and actually play. The Wolfpack is not a team to ever take lightly. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile are 7-2, and are coming off their best defensive showing of the year, holding a Virginia team that averages 26.7 points per game to only 10. From September 27 to October 18, NC State was 0-4, losing to Florida State, Clemson, Boston College, and Louisville by a combined score of 157-73. Still, I get that feeling that NC State will be ready for this game against the Jackets. I’m making it an upset special. Wolfpack sneak out the win.
Final Score: NC State 27, Georgia Tech 24
INCORRECT: Georgia Tech won 56-23

10 Notre Dame at 9 Arizona State (Saturday, 3:30pm, ABC)
Notre Dame simply refuses to go away, and yes that’s a stirring sentiment of how I feel about Notre Dame. I don’t like the Fighting Irish. I never have. I knew in 2012, as the Irish were being hyped through the roof going up against Alabama, that once more an SEC team was going to humiliate the non-SEC team. Notre Dame’s signature game this year is their loss to Florida State. Beating Arizona State would be huge for Notre Dame. I think the Sun Devils keep it close, and they may pull out the win…but I got a feeling that Notre Dame is going to leave the desert with the W.
Final Score: Notre Dame 26, Arizona State 23
INCORRECT: Arizona State won 55-31

23 West Virginia at Texas (Saturday, 3:30pm, Fox Sports 1)
Morgantown, West Virginia, has become the place where Big XII teams go to lose. But this game is in Austin, not Morgantown. Texas, though, has been an afterthought for about five years now. Mountaineers QB Clint Trickett can pick a defense apart. If the Longhorns fail to account for that, the Mountaineers are going to steamroll them. That may happen anyway. Texas is 4-5 on the year, having lost to every ranked team they’ve played, by an average score of 29-11. WVU wins.
Final Score: West Virginia 34, Texas 21
INCORRECT: Texas won 33-16

Texas A&M at 3 Auburn (Saturday, 3:30pm, CBS)
The Aggies fell and fell hard after that season-opening thrashing of South Carolina. Auburn, meanwhile, has held as steady as they could. The Tigers, though, could be caught looking ahead to The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry next week when they visit Georgia. The Aggies are no longer as feared as they were at season’s start. Auburn will win this game, but it depends on how much they’re looking ahead to determine how much the win by. I think it’ll be two touchdowns. Tigers win.
Final Score: Auburn 35, TAMU 21
INCORRECT: Texas A&M won 41-38

7 Kansas State at 6 TCU (Saturday, 7:30pm, Fox)
TCU is averaging 10 points more per game than Kansas State, but K-State has a better scoring defense than the Horned Frogs. This game may very well decide the Big XII title and a potential playoff berth. TCU’s wild win at West Virginia last week gives them some momentum. Kansas State’s only loss was to SEC stalwart Auburn, so their resume looks good to the playoff committee. This game may be low scoring, or it may be a case of which QB has the ball last. If this was in Manhattan, I’d give the nod to K-State. Since it’s at TCU, I’m going with the Horned Frogs to win and solidify their hold on the Big XII.
Final Score: TCU 27, Kansas State 24
CORRECT: TCU won 41-20

5 Alabama at 16 LSU (Saturday, 8:00pm, CBS)
When was the last time Alabama and LSU played a game that wasn’t insanely meaningful to the national title picture? It’s been a long while. The Crimson Tide is pushing hard for a playoff berth, and it looks like they may have to go all the way to the Iron Bowl to make it happen. LSU is just trying to climb back to their usual spot in the sharper end of the rankings, but the SEC West is so good this year that it’s difficult to gain any ground. I look for a hard fought game, something Jim Ross would call a “slobberknocker,” but when the clock hits 00:00, I fully expect Alabama to be on top. Roll Tide.
Final Score: Alabama 27, LSU 21
CORRECT: Alabama won 20-13 in OT

14 Ohio State at 8 Michigan State (Saturday, 8:00pm, ABC)
ESPN’s College Gameday rolls into East Lansing for this game. What’s best for the Big Ten? Michigan State winning out. That’s basically their only hope of reaching the playoff. The Big Ten is so down this year, because their schedules are weak both in and out of conference. The Buckeyes are being continually held down by their loss to Virginia Tech. Michigan State dropped a game to Oregon that was much closer than the final score indicated. When all is said and done in East Lansing, the Spartans will be a step closer to getting their conference a spot in the playoff. Sparty wins.
Final Score: Michigan State 24, Ohio State 14
INCORRECT: Ohio State won 49-37

4 Oregon at 17 Utah (Saturday, 10:00pm, ESPN)
Utah is 2-1 against ranked teams this year (defeated UCLA and USC, lost to Arizona State). Now the Utes play host to a hot Oregon team coming off a huge win over rival Stanford. Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is pushing to reclaim the top spot in the Heisman race. The Ducks were pushed to the brink by Washington State and lost to Arizona, but then turned around and walloped Stanford. I really won’t be surprised if Utah finds a way to defeat Oregon. In fact, I’ll make it one of the upset specials this week. Utes over Ducks.
Final Score: Utah 31, Oregon 27
INCORRECT: Oregon won 51-27

The Right Wing Top Ten
The Associated Press Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll both feature a Preseason version. I even posted a “Preseason Top Ten,” or something to that effect, a while back. I never intended to use that poll as a basis for the Right Wing Top Ten, though.

15. Oklahoma Sooners (last week: NR)
14. LSU Tigers (last week: NR)
13. Nebraska Cornhuskers (last week: NR)
12. Ohio State Buckeyes (last week: NR)
11. Arizona State Sun Devils (last week: 14)

10. Baylor Bears (last week: 13)
Why: Baylor claws their way back into the top ten.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (last week: 10)
Why: Yep, Notre Dame is ranked right here.

8. Kansas State Wildcats (last week: 11)
Why: Kansas State is a good football team. This week’s battle with TCU probably determines the Big XII winner.

7. TCU Horned Frogs (last week: 8)
Why: TCU went to Morgantown, a place Big XII teams go to lose, and beat the Mountaineers in a fantastic game. For the record, if WVU had been ranked here, I’d have had a hard time dropping them.

6. Auburn Tigers (last week: 6)
Why: Auburn went to Oxford and knocked off Ole Miss. That counts for something.

5. Michigan State Spartans (last week: 5)
Why: Sparty looks to be the top dog in the Big Ten. This week’s date with Ohio State will tell the tale, though.

4. Oregon Ducks (last week: 4)
Why: Oregon stomped Stanford and once more looks like a playoff team.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (last week: 3)
Why: Alabama is playing like one of the best teams in the nation, but a primetime trip to LSU will test them.

2. Florida State Seminoles (last week: 2)
Why: The Noles got by the last real threat they’ll face before the playoff.

1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (last week: 1)
Why: Mississippi State olds the top spot, even though an Arkansas team on the rise took them to the brink.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee unveiled its first set of rankings Tuesday night, and it’s quite different from the AP or Coaches Poll. Ole Miss is still very highly ranked, even after losing to LSU. Georgia, ranked comfortably inside the Top Ten in both the AP and the Coaches rankings, finds itself 11th in the eyes of the CFPSC. So, with the new rankings out, we’ll bow to peer-pressure and start using the CFPSC rankings in the picks.

This week we get some big games. Florida State visits the toughest test left on its schedule, a Thursday night affair in Louisville. Florida and Georgia meet once more in the World’s Largest Outdoor Non-Alcoholic Fun-For-The-Whole-Family Party. TCU ventures to Morgantown. Auburn crosses state lines to battle Ole Miss. And there’s a ranked PAC-12 battle for kicks.

The Games:

2 Florida State at 25 Louisville (Thursday, 7:30pm, ESPN)
Upset special, right here. Florida State has yet to truly look impressive. The Noles are averaging two fewer TDs per game than they were at this time last season. Louisville, meanwhile, has been sneakily good, especially on defense. Kinda makes you wonder what Todd Grantham was doing all those years at UGA… Anyway, the Noles need to be on the lookout here, as Louisville will definitely be fired up for this one. I’m not going to be surprised to hear that Louisville has knocked off the ACC front-runner. Cardinals score the upset.
Final Score: Louisville 28, FSU 24
INCORRECT: Florida State won 42-31

Florida vs 11 Georgia (Saturday, 3:30pm, CBS)
Todd Gurley accepted money for autographs, seemed fairly apologetic afterward, the university suspended him indefinitely, and after two games (at Missouri, at Arkansas) they sought his reinstatement. The NCAA said that’s all well and good, but Gurley has to sit two more games (vs Florida, at Kentucky). Last year, Johnny Manziel was suspended for one half of one game (vs Rice). Manziel then openly flaunted his “infraction” by doing that stupid money sign every time he gained a yard. I wish the NCAA had a better, more concrete set of rules. That said, I wonder if Florida can stop Georgia. After all, Florida held Missouri to 119 yards of total offense…and lost 42-13. I hate to break it to Florida, but Georgia is better than Missouri on both sides of the ball. Chubb has a solid day against a pretty stout Gator defense and Mason makes enough throws to win, while the defense makes its fair share of plays. Dawgs roll.
Final Score: Georgia 35, Florida 14
INCORRECT: Florida won 38-20

7 TCU at 20 West Virginia (Saturday, 3:30pm, ESPN2)
Quick, name the highest ranked Big XII team. If you said TCU, you’re right. West Virginia, though, is arguably a better conference team. See, WVU beat Baylor by two touchdowns while Baylor beat TCU by a field goal after giving up 58 points. Of course, that means TCU gave up 61 to a team that WVU only allowed 27 points to. Confused yet? Big XII ranked teams have a habit of going to Morgantown and falling. I’m actually quite tempted to call for an upset here, but I think TCU is settling into their role as a Big XII favorite. It’s possible that the BIG XII is sorted out next week when TCU hosts Kansas State. So this might be a trap game for the Horned Frogs…Still, I think TCU wins this one, but it’ll be close.
Final Score: TCU 31, WVU 28
CORRECT: TCU won 31-30

3 Auburn at 4 Ole Miss (Saturday, 7:30pm, ESPN2)
Auburn barely got by South Carolina, beating the Gamecocks 42-35. Ole Miss finally faltered against LSU. Now, though, the Rebels are at home and welcoming the Tigers to Oxford. Auburn needs to find a solid groove on both sides of the ball to account for the big games they have remaining (Ole Miss, Georgia, Alabama). Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace is due for a bounce back game after a less-than-stellar outing against LSU. If the Ole Miss landshark defense can stop Auburn, which is no easy task, then Ole Miss wins this game. And that’s what I think happens. Auburn is too good offensively to be totally shut down, but Nick Marshall just cannot make enough plays to pull one out for the Tigers. Ole Miss wins.
Final Score: Ole Miss 24, Auburn 17
INCORRECT: Auburn won 35-31

12 Arizona at 22 UCLA (Saturday, 10:30pm, ESPN)
The PAC-12 claims there is an East Coast Bias. Well, yeah…you guys don’t play until 10:30pm. Most of us east of the Mississippi have already been up and watched over 10 hours of football. We’re tired. We’re burned out by then. So yeah, we’re biased to the teams that actually make it to television while we’re still coherent. But look, you’ve got a matchup of two teams within the Top 25. That’s good, right? Arizona is riding high after beating Oregon, but I think the Wildcats come back down to Earth this week as Brett Hundley and the Bruins power past them, scoring an important PAC-12 South home win.
Final Score: UCLA 27, Arizona 21
CORRECT: UCLA won 17-7

The Right Wing Top Ten
The Associated Press Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll both feature a Preseason version. I even posted a “Preseason Top Ten,” or something to that effect, a while back. I never intended to use that poll as a basis for the Right Wing Top Ten, though.

15. Arizona Wildcats (last week: NR)
14. Arizona State Sun Devils (last week: 14)
13. Baylor Bears (last week: 13)
12. East Carolina Pirates (last week: 12)
11. Kansas State Wildcats (last week: 11)

10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (last week: 10)
Why: Notre Dame anchors the tenth spot in my poll.

9. Ole Miss Rebels (last week: 2)
Why: You’re going to fall if you lose, unless you are being chosen by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. To me, Ole Miss had to drop.

8. TCU Horned Frogs (last week: 9)
Why: Those Horned Frogs are making some noise in the Big XII. A trip to WVU will tell a big part of their playoff-push story.

7. Georgia Bulldogs (last week: 8)
Why: Georgia is rested and ready for the annual matchup with Florida. Star RB Todd Gurley will not be back until the Auburn game.

6. Auburn Tigers (last week: 7)
Why: Auburn had a rough win over South Carolina and must now travel to Oxford...

5. Michigan State Spartans (last week: 5)
Why: Sparty looks to be the top dog in the Big Ten. A later-season date with Ohio State will tell the tale, though.

4. Oregon Ducks (last week: 6)
Why: This is me correcting my own error of not having Oregon ahead of Sparty. Oregon looks to still be on a collision course with Arizona State for the PAC-12 title.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (last week: 4)
Why: Alabama still can grab control of a playoff spot, but they need some help.

2. Florida State Seminoles (last week: 3)
Why: The only thing standing in the way of Florida State and reaching the playoff is a Thursday night game in Louisville.

1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (last week: 1)
Why: Mississippi State hung 45 on Kentucky and Dak Prescott had some plays that may go down as his Heisman moments.

If the Playoff Started Today

I say goodbye to a section that got a good run for a while. Now that we actually have a playoff selection committee, I no longer need to guess at what they’re going to do.

Week Nine is upon us. Through 50 games, I’ve correctly picked 30. That’s not that good. I’m usually better. Then again, this has been the year of the upset. Some wild and wacky things have happened in college football this season. Mississippi State is currently #1 in the nation. Kansas State is currently the top team in the Big XII. The Big Ten is very nearly on life support when it comes to the playoff. Kentucky is ahead of South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee in the SEC East. And the funny thing is, things get even crazier next week.

For the picks, I’m still using the AP Poll. No Georgia, as the Dawgs have the week off to prepare for the greatly diminished Florida Gators. (I’m no fan of using the Transitive Property in college football, but Georgia beat Missouri 34-0 and Missouri beat Florida 42-13…so obviously Georgia will beat Florida 76-13, right?). Instead we get an unranked ACC game, a ranked match-up of PAC-12 South teams, a ranked match-up of SEC West teams, and two ranked vs unranked cross-divisional games from the SEC.

The Games:

Miami(FL) at Virginia Tech (Thursday8:00pm, ESPN)
Miami has played one ranked opponent (on the road at Nebraska) and lost by 10. The Canes also lost to Louisville and Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech has played one ranked opponent (on the road at Ohio State) and won by 14. The Hokies followed that up by losing to East Carolina and Georgia Tech. They just lost to Pittsburgh. Neither team has been has impressive as they once were. Virginia Tech looked like a team that could make a run, but their recent losses have solidly halted their momentum. Miami is basically Duke Johnson and 21 other players. I think the Hokies win here, because it’s in Blacksburg. Move this game to Miami and that’s a different story.
Final Score: Virginia Tech 28, Miami 21

INCORRECT: Miami won 30-6

3 Ole Miss at 24 LSU (Saturday, 7:15pm, ESPN)
The last time LSU faced a ranked team they gave up 41 points to Auburn. They barely squeaked by Florida. Ole Miss, meanwhile, just obliterated Tennessee to the point that Hugh Freeze actually apologized to Butch Jones for his team scoring a late TD. Ole Miss has the better QB in Bo Wallace. LSU has a good freshman RB in Leonard Fournette. Ole Miss, though, has what I believe is the best defense in the country. This game might be close for the first half, but I think Ole Miss will walk away with it in the second half. Rebels win.
Final Score: Ole Miss 30, LSU 17
INCORRECT: LSU won 10-7

South Carolina at 5 Auburn (Saturday7:30pm, SEC Network)
Auburn is good. I actually think Auburn is better this year than they were last year. South Carolina, though, isn’t. The Gamecocks have stumbled. They’ve lost to TAMU, Missouri, and Kentucky. Last weekend, when Georgia played Arkansas, Alabama played TAMU, and the Gamecocks hosted Furman, it was South Carolina’s 21 point halftime lead that was the closest game among the three. Auburn is going to roll in this game. I’m calling for a 21-point Tigers win, but it could be worse. South Carolina is looking for answers.
Final Score: Auburn 35, South Carolina 14
CORRECT: Auburn won 42-35

4 Alabama at Tennessee (Saturday7:30pm, ESPN2)
Some people complain about the cross-division rivalries in the SEC being unfair. After all, Ole Miss plays Vanderbilt every year and Mississippi State plays Kentucky every year…meanwhile, Florida plays LSU, Georgia plays Auburn, and Tennessee plays Alabama. But, college football is cyclical. Kentucky is up this year, but so is MSU. Vandy is down this year. Alabama is a team that almost loses to Arkansas one week, then blows out the Aggies by 59 the next week. Tennessee is a team that is still about a year away from contending in the conference. Hopefully they put up a better fight against the Tide than they did last week against Ole Miss. Alabama will win this one, but I’m curious to see what the Vols bring to the table.
Final Score: Alabama 31, Tennessee 17
CORRECT: Alabama won 34-20

20 USC at 19 Utah (Saturday, 10:00pm, Fox Sports 1)
Show of hands: who here realized that Utah was ranked? Keep those hands up if you realized that Utah was ranked ahead of USC. The Utes have been quiet. Very quiet. USC lacks the ability to be quiet. When you’re the highest-profile school in your area (sorry, UCLA) and you’ve basically served as the de facto NFL team for Los Angeles for the last decade, there is no such thing as quiet. USC needs a win to remain in the PAC-12 South race. If Utah wins, the game next week between the Utes and Arizona State will likely decide the PAC-12 South winner. I look for USC to win this one, but don’t be surprised either way. Trojans win a close game.
Final Score: USC 24, Utah 20
INCORRECT: Utah won 24-21

The Right Wing Top Ten
The Associated Press Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll both feature a Preseason version. I even posted a “Preseason Top Ten,” or something to that effect, a while back. I never intended to use that poll as a basis for the Right Wing Top Ten, though.

15. Ohio State Buckeyes (last week: NR)
14. Arizona State Sun Devils (last week: 15)
13. Baylor Bears (last week: 4)
12. East Carolina Pirates (last week: 14)
11. Kansas State Wildcats (last week: 12)

10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (last week: 5)
Why: The Irish pushed the envelope on the pick play and the refs finally broke and called them on it. Otherwise, Notre Dame would’ve beaten Florida State.

9. TCU Horned Frogs (last week: 13)
Why: Those Horned Frogs are making some noise in the Big XII.

8. Georgia Bulldogs (last week: 9)
Why: Again, Gurley who? Georgia has actually played better football without Gurley than they did with him. They just handed the SEC West their first non-SEC-West-opponent loss this year, and the beating of Arkansas was not as close as the score indicates.

7. Auburn Tigers (last week: 8)
Why: Auburn is quietly putting together a nice little run after faltering against Mississippi State.

6. Oregon Ducks (last week: 7)
Why: Oregon looks to be on a collision course with Arizona State for the PAC-12 title.

5. Michigan State Spartans (last week: 6)
Why: Sparty looks to be the top dog in the Big Ten. A later-season date with Ohio State will tell the tale, though.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (last week: 10)
Why: You beat the Aggies by 59 points and you’re bound to jump up a long way in the polls.

3. Florida State Seminoles (last week: 3)
Why: Okay, Florida State beat Notre Dame, but really Notre Dame beat themselves. There is no one standing in the way of Florida State and reaching the playoff.

2. Ole Miss Rebels (last week: 2)
Why: Ole Miss has, without doubt, the best defense in the country. They just shut down a Tennessee team that will probably be an SEC contender next year.

1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (last week: 1)
Why: Mississippi State begins their defense of the top spot.

If the Playoff Started Today
I started this section last year, knowing that the College Football Playoff was coming. This is what I think the selection committee will do. This has nothing to do with my Top 15 poll, or with the current AP or Coaches Poll. If the playoff started today, who would the committee select?

The Four Teams In
These four teams would make up the playoff field if it all started today. #1 would play #4, #2 would play #3. I’ve ranked them as such, because I believe the Selection Committee will move to limit two teams from the same conference reaching the championship game. Of course, the Egg Bowl later this year will sort out the Mississippi schools.
1 Mississippi State
2 Florida State
3 Michigan State
4 Ole Miss

The First Four Teams Out
5. Alabama
6. Oregon
7. Georgia
8. Notre Dame
